ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The environmental footprint of urban areas is high. It accounts for 60-80% of the world's energy consumption, 75% of the natural resources consumed and is responsible for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions. Urban metabolism is a bio-inspired approach referring to the internal processes by which natural systems, whatever their scale (from protein to ecosystem), maintain a continuous exchange of matter and energy with their environment. This enables them to optimize their functioning, growth and reproduction as part of an adaptive strategy. Natural systems, however dissipative, organize themselves to optimize robustness and efficiency by capturing or reusing what is generated by their metabolic activity. A city's high environmental footprint is precisely the result of a metabolic disorder! Can the knowledge acquired about natural systems provide solutions for tomorrow's urban worlds?
