ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The production of mineral raw materials is growing exponentially to meet the needs and economic development of a growing world population. In a world in transition, needs are changing, both in terms of the type of raw materials required and in terms of quantity. The countries that produce these materials (southern hemisphere countries) are often not those that consume the end products (northern hemisphere countries). As a result, the countries where the raw materials are mined bear the brunt of the environmental and social impacts, while at the same time pitting extractive activities against local populations for access to fundamental resources such as water and land. We therefore need to rethink the governance and sustainability of extractive activities on every scale, from mining territory to global scale.
