ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
" When I tell my university colleagues that I teach concrete and reinforced concrete, they laugh. They teach the physics of phase transformations, molecular chemistry or the mechanics of discontinuous media. And yet, to study and understand this material is to mobilize all these hard sciences. What' s more, it sometimes means going beyond established scientific knowledge to conduct very fundamental research that enables us to better understand concrete and use it more effectively.
Very often disliked today because it is accused of being a pollutant for the planet, concrete was nevertheless the material of the reconstruction of Europe after the Second World War. In fact, it is a material that has been used since antiquity and its great possibilities have allowed the greatest architects to build their most beautiful works of art. Indeed, concrete can be translucent, lighter than water, waterproof, ultra-resistant, self-repairing, a CO2 trap, recyclable, draining, photovoltaic, nano-textured to produce energy.... In a word: magic!
