Café scientifique - What future for viticulture?

May 9, 2019 8:00 PM

On Thursday, May 9, 2019, the Science-Actions association invites you to discuss viticulture. The Café Scientifique "What future for viticulture?" will be held at Le Beaujolais restaurant in Chambéry, starting at 8pm.

What does the future hold for viticulture?

Winegrowing is, quite rightly, one of the symbols of France's heritage. Is it not one of France's oldest economic activities, and one of the most internationally renowned? It's also one of the few industries with a foreign trade surplus.

The fact that, for many of us, it is associated with the notion of pleasure obviously contributes to its popularity.

And yet, alcohol is a major cause of death in France. The pesticides widely used by the wine industry are bad for health, and climate change (to which viticulture contributes) makes the future of this activity in the south of France problematic. These challenges come at a time when France's international position has been weakened by competition from "new world" wines.

To top it all off, the Chinese are buying up "our" châteaux, particularly in the Bordeaux region. What does the future hold for French viticulture? Will it be able to adapt to the new demands of the French, the evolution of global demand and the challenges of climate change? What changes are consumers ready to accept?
