On Thursday, January 18, 2018, the association Science Actions will be looking at the latest feats of optics research. It will be held at the Le Beaujolais restaurant in Chambéry, starting at 8pm.
OPTICS: VISION WITHOUT LIMITS?
The first eyeglasses were probably developed by Armati in 1285, followed by long-sightedness by Lippershey in 1608, and immediately afterwards, the microscope and telescope by Galileo in 1609. What technological advances have been made since the work of these pioneers! Today, optical instrumentation is combined with electronics and lasers, and covers not only visible light, but the entire electromagnetic spectrum from ultraviolet to far infrared. It enables us, for example, to see planets orbiting distant stars, to detect cancer, to transport unimaginable amounts of information, to cut through the hardest materials, to detect pollution, to see through walls, to image atoms, and so on. As for the most widespread optical instrument on earth, the eye, progress has been considerable: not only have progressive lenses and contact lenses, such complex technological devices, become commonplace, but so has the oh-so-delicate surgery of the eye... and some blind people have practically regained their sight!
Come and find out about the latest advances in optics research and ask the experts what the future holds at this café-débat:
- Olivier Savy, head of the ophthalmology department atHôpital de Chambéry;
- Gwenael Gaborit, Senior Lecturer at USMB and Scientific Director of Kapteos (Montmélian);
- Jean-Louis Coutaz, professor of physics at USMB and deputy director of the IMEP-LAHC laboratory;
- François Simoens, strategic marketing manager (infrared and millimetric sensors) at CEA-Leti in Grenoble;
- David Mouillet, astronomer atGrenoble's Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers.
SCIENTIFIC CAFÉS
The Cafés Scientifiques (or "Cafés Sciences et Citoyen, Débat") offer the general public the chance to debate, in a convivial atmosphere, with experts, researchers and professionals, on a wide range of subjects, many of them topical. They are organized by the association Science Actions, in collaboration with :
- l'Université Savoie Mont Blanc
- the city of Chambéry
- Galerie Euréka
- le Beaujolais restaurant and l'Astrée cinema
