The University of Turin (UniTO), and the Laboratoire Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Etudes Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) atuniversité Savoie Mont Blanc, are organizing an international colloquium entitled " La parole du pouvoir - Les princes de la maison de Savoie et l'usage des langues (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècle)" . The colloquium will take place in Chambéry on October 12 and 13, 2022, and in Turin on October 14 and 15, 2022.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Located on either side of the western Alps, the States of Savoy were created after a long process of territorial construction, which led them to encompass very heterogeneous populations. Living in multiple linguistic and cultural areas (French, Italian, Franco-Provençal, Occitan, German), the subjects of the House of Savoy spoke a wide variety of languages, which is one of the reasons why Latin remained the administrative language for so long. Although the Edict of Rivoli of 1561, which imposed the use of French and Italian in administrative documents, was an essential turning point, this evolution was not linear and did not eliminate the multilingualism specific to the Savoy states. The linguistic richness of the former territories of the House of Savoy will be highlighted at this symposium, taking into account the diversity of local developments, and studying both administrative practices and the life of a court whose international influence was accompanied by a high degree of multilingualism.
The 35 lectures given by French, Italian, Swiss and German academics, in one of the two languages of the symposium (French and Italian), will be broadcast live at the following address https://zoom.us/j/97471286774?pwd=OFJ4NkVkOGk0SllsYWwvYWVOdFVIZz09
