SOLAR ACADEMY Summer Solar School "From solar cells to cities: multidisciplinary approaches".

october 19, 2020 09:00 - october 23, 2020 17:00

The Solar Academy team at Université Savoie Mont Blanc is organizing the "4Sun 2020" Scientific Summer Solar School on the Bourget-du-Lac campus from October 19 to 23, 2020.

This first annual event aims to provide young researchers and doctoral students with a multidisciplinary understanding of solar energy transition at different scales: from solar cells to cities. The 4Sun Science School is also a valuable opportunity to network with participants from other countries.

Background and objectives

A 56% increase in global energy demand is expected between 2010 and 2040. Solar energy technologies can play an important role in the energy transition, through passive applications and power generation, while helping to tackle the issues of climate change, population growth and energy security, water scarcity, economic growth and increasing urbanization. Solar resources are abundant and diffuse, making them particularly well-suited to the building sector. What's more, it can be a vector for growth, linking economic objectives to the emergence of future technologies. The challenge is to transform this potential into real electricity production. This is the ambition of the SOLAR ACADEMY Graduate School at Université Savoie Mont Blanc, in partnership with CNRS and CEA.

The "4Sun 2020" Scientific Summer School is the first of an annual series of events designed to provide young researchers and PhD students with a multidisciplinary understanding of solar energy transition at different scales: from solar cells to cities. The 4Sun Science School is also a valuable networking opportunity with participants from other countries. Our unique solar campus, in a magnificent location at the foot of the Alps and close to France's largest natural lake (Lac de Bourget), is an ideal place to meet national and international experts and young researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

The "4Sun 2020" program

The program includes plenary presentations from different disciplines: solar cell technology, building integration, modeling and data science, law and public policy, economics and business models.

In addition, thematic workshops, organized in parallel sessions, will enable selected topics to be explored in greater depth. Workshops include solar contracting, experimental evaluations of solar cell performance, experimental evaluations of solar panel and system performance, modeling solar resources in cities, and more.

Participants also have the opportunity to bring and present a poster on their current research, and to visit the extended experimental platform at INES (Institut national de l'énergie solaire). Round-table discussions on career opportunities (Marie Curie fellowships will be organized).

Registration opens in September.
