He was nevertheless urgently appointed on May 10, 1940, following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain, and in a dramatic European context marked by successive Allied defeats by Nazi troops and the British army's inability to evacuate from Dunkirk. With the threat of Hitler's invasion of the UK looming and 200,000 British soldiers trapped at Dunkirk, Churchill discovers that his own party is plotting against him, and that even his King, George VI, is highly skeptical about his ability to handle the onerous task ahead. Churchill is faced with a fateful decision: negotiate a peace treaty with Nazi Germany and spare the British people the terrible cost, or mobilize the country and fight against all odds. With the support of Clementine, the woman he married 31 years before, he turns to the British people for the strength to stand and fight for his country's ideals, freedom and independence. With the power of words as his last resort, and with the help of his indefatigable secretary, Winston Churchill must compose and deliver the speeches that will rally his country.
