Green chemistry is a rapidly growing field, with an increasing number of companies, as well as research and higher education institutions, committed to sustainable development. This innovative, multidisciplinary program aims to train specialists in this field who can meet the current and future needs and expectations of both industry and academia.

The courses are designed to develop the following skills:

  • Apply and use your knowledge of chemistry to successfully complete a project or solve a problem.
  • Harnessing and making the most of renewable resources.
  • Identify and assess the sustainability issues associated with the development of a product, method, or chemical process.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate synthetic routes in the context of sustainable development using the principles of green chemistry.

The master’s program allows students to pursue a Ph.D. (approximately 50% of graduates) in France or abroad, in academia or in collaboration with industry. It is also possible to pursue additional professional training (management, MBA, CEIPI, etc.). Thanks to their dual expertise in chemistry and fields related to the environment, graduates can also enter the workforce directly, where companies are offering a growing number of jobs and careers related to green chemistry.

This master’s program prepares students to take on managerial roles requiring a master’s degree in the field of green and sustainable chemistry, focusing on the development of eco-processes—particularly catalytic processes (which account for 90% of industrial processes)— the use of bio-based raw materials, the development of carbon-free or low-carbon energy sources, and the consideration of environmental impact—either upstream through eco-design or downstream through pollution treatment.

The curriculum is designed to enable students to explore both fundamental and applied/industrial aspects in depth. Courses are structured to foster students’ independence through practical exercises and research project management, thereby facilitating their transition into the workforce. This includes two internships totaling 7 to 10 months, or the option to complete both years of the master’s program on a work-study basis (or just the second year).

This high-level program is led by a team of faculty members who are internationally recognized in their fields of expertise and are members of the Institute of Chemistry of Environments and Materials in Poitiers, as well as industry experts with specialized “professional” skills. International mobility is encouraged through financial aid programs and facilitated by the fact that courses in the Master’s program are taught in English. Upon completion of the Master’s program, students choose either to pursue doctoral studies (to become a researcher/research professor or a senior R&D executive in industry) or to enter the workforce. Three months after graduation, the employment rate is approximately 85%, with positions corresponding to roles as chemical engineers in research and development in green chemistry, eco-processes, agri-food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, the environment, low-carbon energy, and nanomaterials, as well as occasionally as QHSE engineers.

The Master's in Chemistry at Amiens trains professionals at the five-year post-secondary level through initial, continuing, and work-study programs (the work-study option is available for the combined M1+M2 program or for the M2 program alone). This Master's program offers eight tracks that provide multidisciplinary training in the fields of chemistry, biotechnology, and process engineering. Our tracks aim to train future executives capable of designing and leading research and development (R&D) projects while integrating environmental considerations and current regulations: project management, eco-design, Life Cycle Assessment, regulations (REACH), intellectual property, and more.

Within this Master’s program in Chemistry, two tracks are part of the Green Chemistry Academy initiative: the Sustainable Organic Chemistry track and the Sustainable Materials Chemistry track. These two tracks are designed for students who wish to design and synthesize the molecules and materials of tomorrow in a clean and sustainable manner, with a focus on Green Chemistry. Our students acquire solid knowledge in the synthesis of molecules and materials, as well as in extraction, characterization, analysis, and testing techniques. Courses are taught in a traditional format—lectures, tutorials, and lab sessions—while incorporating flipped learning and various projects as appropriate. Numerous professionals contribute to the program, sharing their expertise. Depending on their career goals, our students prepare either for direct entry into the industry or for pursuing a Ph.D.

The "Green Chemistry" master's program provides training in the skills needed for cleaner, safer, and more environmentally friendly chemistry. The program focuses on eco-compatible chemistry, including green synthesis strategies, the use of alternative solvents, sustainable chemical activation methods, and various forms of catalysis. It also covers sustainable polymer chemistry, formulation, alternative energy sources, biomass utilization, and the use of transition metals in green technologies. Regulatory and standards-related aspects, ecotoxicity, life cycle analysis, and project management are also integrated into the curriculum.

The M1 track is part of the Chemistry program, which offers five tracks (Health Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Instrumentation, Theoretical Chemistry, and Chemistry of Interfaces and Surfaces). The M1 track preparing students for the agrégation in physical sciences is shared with the M1 CV track. The program includes 40% specialized courses, 45% core curriculum, and 15% elective courses to be chosen from the tracks, allowing students to tailor their education to their interests. The M1 Chemistry program is also available online, offering flexibility, identical content to the in-person program, and an adjustable duration.

In the M2, specialization is deepened with courses taught in English. This M2 program is co-accredited with the ENSIACET engineering school. The two-year program combines lectures, tutorials, and lab sessions, group projects, and mandatory internships in laboratories or companies, in France or abroad (8 weeks in the M1, 6 months in the M2). It is available as an initial degree program, a work-study program, or a continuing education program. Career opportunities include positions as chemical engineers in R&D, production, or technological innovation, as well as roles in eco-design, life cycle analysis, or in engineering and consulting firms. The relevant sectors include fine chemicals, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, agri-food, cosmetics, materials, recycling, pollution control, and clean energy.

As part of this master’s program, students are trained in greener and more sustainable chemistry, within the context of the circular economy and the bioeconomy, addressing current and future environmental challenges. The program is therefore fully aligned with the priorities of the France 2030 plan. The program focuses on the eco-friendly synthesis of molecules, materials, and polymers, as well as the use of innovative technologies and new analytical and digital tools for chemistry. A multidisciplinary approach enables students to grasp the full scope of issues related to green chemistry, the valorization of biomass and waste, and process transformation.

The program is tailored to students’ career goals, whether they are interested in the industrial sector or academic research. The primary goal of the faculty is to train competent, engaged, motivated, and independent chemists for the chemistry of tomorrow, and to help them transition into the professional world or pursue a doctoral degree.

The courses are designed to develop the following skills:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate synthetic routes in green chemistry;
  • Promote the responsible use of materials in the context of the environmental, socioeconomic, and regulatory challenges of sustainable development;
  • Take a scientific approach to solving complex problems;
  • Assess the economic, regulatory, and/or environmental impact of an existing process or one to be developed;
  • To integrate into and grow within a chosen professional environment;
  • Lead projects that contribute to research, development, and innovation.
