Abstract :

My thesis work focuses on the issue of communication between humans and machines. I have explored this problem from both directions, through the following two questions: How can a machine effectively communicate with humans? How can humans effectively communicate with machines? Regarding the first question, I have leveraged the concept of ‘wise objects’ introduced within
the LISTIC laboratory. These objects have the ability to autonomously learn their functionality and the behaviour of their users. However, they lack the ability to communicate with users using human semantics. As for the second question, I established a collaboration with the DOMUS laboratory, which is developing a solution to support aging in place. This solution involves a connected
home and the definition of scenario specifications to enhance the lives of the residents. My work has entailed defining the actions that the home should execute based on orally dictated scenarios. I have thus addressed the challenges of semantic augmentation to enable clear communication from a machine to a human and the extraction of high-level semantic actions to facilitate human communication with a machine.
