ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
When teaching French as a foreign language today, are we teaching only the French spoken in France, particularly in Paris, in its written, literary form, or are we also incorporating other ways of speaking French, from Montreal to Cotonou to Toulouse? Does the French language belong to France or to all French speakers? Does colloquial French have a place? Teaching French to non-French speakers (French as a Foreign Language, FLE) raises two crucial questions, which will be our starting points: why is there such consistency in the hegemony of "standard" French in FLE teaching methodology, even in French-speaking countries?
And how can geographical and/or social variation be effectively introduced into FLE classes? We will trace the history of the institutionalization of this norm and propose some avenues for exploration. And how can geographical and/or social variation be effectively introduced into FLE courses? We will trace the history of the institutionalization of this standard and propose some avenues for a "pan-Francophone" approach to FLE teaching.
