OBJECTIVES :

  • Master stability analysis tools for rock compartments,
  • Master slope stability analysis tools,
  • Make the link between field analysis and stability calculations,
  • Understand the limitations of conventional analysis tools,
  • Know how to size a protective structure.

ORGANIZATION :

This academics includes 5 modules:

  • MODULE 1: Fundamentals of soil mechanics
  • MODULE 2 : Géologie appliquée et Fondamentaux de mécanique des roches
  • MODULE 3 : Géomorphologie
  • MODULE 4: Geomechanical approach to gravity instabilities
  • MODULE 5: Behavior, design and sizing of protection structures

RYTHM :

Cette formation de 49 h se déroule de fin septembre à fin novembre, sur le campus du Bourget-du-Lac.

Module 1 : Fondamentaux de mécanique des sols – 10,5 h

Understand soil equilibrium under stress: characteristic physical quantities, state of stress, laws of behavior, pore pressures and settlement.
Target skills:

  • Handle the different physical quantities that characterize soil,
  • Determining the state of stress in a soil
  • Handle the main concepts of soil mechanical behavior
  • Calculate pore pressure at a given point in a saturated soil mass
  • Calculate settlement under foundation

Module 2 : Géologie appliquée et Fondamentaux de mécanique des roches – 7 h

Acquire basic rock mechanics for geotechnics, natural gravity hazards and underground work.
Target skills:

  • Understanding the mechanical processes involved in rock failure
  • Classify a rock mass using RMR, Q-Barton, GSI methods
  • Understanding and handling different rheologies

Module  3 : Géomorphologie – 10,5 heures

Understand the regional and local geological context of the site studied.
Target skills:

  • Recognize the main surface formations.
  • Identify the main landforms and their evolutionary processes.
  • Identify discontinuities in a rocky massif.

Module  4 : Approche géomécanique des instabilités gravitaires – 10,5 heures

Estimate the gravity hazard associated with boulder falls and landslides
Target skills :

  • Landslide :
    - Perform a planar landslide calculation,
    - Perform a circular landslide calculation (Fellenius or Bishop).
  • Rock instabilities :
    - Analyze a planar sliding mechanism,
    - Analyze a dihedral sliding mechanism (with stereogram),
    - Analyze a mowing mechanism.

Module  5 : Comportement, conception et dimensionnement des ouvrages de protection – 10,5 heures

Understand the mechanical operation of the main slope instability protection structures (boulder falls and landslides). Design and dimension a protection structure in a given context,
Target skills :

    • Know how the main protective structures work,
    • Handle static and dynamic loading classes for rockfall protection structures,
    • Carry out a mechanical analysis of a support placed on an unstable slope.
