The aim of this module is to master the fundamentals, methods and tools required for terminology work in an increasingly digital environment. How to analyze corpora for terminological purposes, and how to represent conceptual systems are just some of the points that will be covered in order to identify criteria to help in the drafting of terminological definitions.

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological foundations of terminology in the digital age.
  • Familiarize yourself with computer tools adapted to terminology work.
  • Know how to write "good" definitions adapted to terminological needs.
  • Understand the role of standards in terminology work.

■ DESCRIPTION

The aim of this module is to lay the foundations for a contemporary approach to corpus-based terminology, defining the methodological aspects and tools applied to translation, while illustrating the content in a professional context.
It also aims to present the range of terminological activities carried out within European institutions for the translation of legislative texts, or applied to other contexts (subtitling, communication, media, for example).

■ OBJECTIVES

  • Familiarize yourself with terminology concepts applied to translation.
  • Know terminology in professional contexts.
  • Learn to use terminology resources (WIPO Pearl, IATE).

Translators, interpreters, language teachers, linguists, company and public service executives.

Introduction to the fundamental concepts of corpus-based terminology and terminography in the context of translation.
Presentation and use of corpus-based terminology analysis tools.
Practical application to enrich a terminology database:

Research and use of terminology resources, European Union terminology:
- IATE and other databases.
Terminology work for translation within European institutions:
- Inter-institutional and academic cooperation methods (projects for IATE, "Terminologie sans frontières" program projects).

■ DESCRIPTION

Information processing applications are increasingly based on the use of terminology resources, which must be made available in digital format. This requires the representation of terms and concepts in a format that can be understood by a computer, taking into account current standards. Such representation relies on specific methods and software environments, which require terminology work to be adapted accordingly.

■ OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the challenges and opportunities offered by digital technology for Terminology.
  • Master the methods and software tools used to build terminologies.
  • Master exchange formats and representation standards.
  • Build a multilingual terminology in digital format using a methodological approach.

■ TARGET AUDIENCE

Terminologists, translators, technical writers, anyone wishing to acquire the minimum skills needed to build terminologies in a format that can be exchanged and processed electronically.

■ CONTENTS

Digital Terminology Applications:
- Thesauri, Terminology Resources, Semantic Web.

- Consequences for terminology work.
Standards and exchange formats :
- ISO standards.

- W3C standards (semantic web).
Methods and IT environments for the conceptual dimension:
- CmapTools, Protégé, Tedi.

Methods and IT environments for the linguistic dimension:

- Terminology databases: IATE, FranceTerme, Neoloteca, TERMIUM Plus. Terminology in institutions.
Step-by-step construction of an example of terminology in digital format:
- Lexonomy.

SPECIFICITIES OF ACADEMICS

  • The 112-hour academics course is made up of 2 compulsory skill blocks, 1 common block and a specialization block of your choice.
  • The DU takes place remotely from January to June.
  • Possibility of taking 1 block à la carte with a University Certificate.

RYTHM :

  • Teaching is given in French or English, depending on the participants.
  • The academics can be taken over 1 or 2 years, with the option of taking a block à la carte and capitalizing on it to obtain the DU over a maximum of 2 years.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS :

An assessment is scheduled at the end of each block.
A final assessment will take the form of a written report in French or English and an oral presentation.

The award of the diploma is conditional upon :
- Completion of the academics curriculum.
- An overall average of at least 10/20.
