Pangaea is a data platform for research in the fields of earth and environmental sciences. The areas covered are: environmental chemistry, geochemistry, life sciences, geophysics, and environmental physics.

The Pangaea information system is operated as an open-access library for archiving, publishing, and distributing georeferenced data from Earth system research. Pangaea guarantees the long-term availability (more than 10 years) of its content. Pangaea is open to any project, institution, or individual scientist to use, archive, and publish data.

Pangaea focuses on georeferenced observational and experimental data. Citing, comprehensive metadata descriptions, data and metadata interoperability, a high degree of structural and semantic harmonization of the data inventory, and the commitment of host institutions ensure the fairness of archived data.
