One Christmas Eve, young Clara is given an inanimate puppet, a nutcracker. As she holds it in her arms, she falls asleep and dreams of a fantastical world where toys and fears come to life. Published in Berlin in 1816, this tale by Hoffmann, a master of German Romanticism, inspired Marius Petipa to create his first dance version in 1892. Amid lead soldiers, rats and oversized dolls, the world of childhood becomes ballet. Clara's dreams and nightmares are supported by Tchaikovsky's sparkling, colorful score. In 1985, Rudolf Nureyev remounted the ballet at the Opéra national de Paris with sets and costumes that underlined the strangeness of the tale. Snowflakes, flowers and enchanted landscapes form the backdrop for dazzling choreography. Guided by the wooden puppet-turned-Prince Charming, young Clara confronts her desires and anxieties in a tale of initiation.
