Finding your thesis topic

If you'd like to do a PhD in the Sciences, Engineering, Environment Doctoral School (Doctoral School SIE), there are 3 options open to you:

  • Choose a subject from among the theses offered byDoctoral School SIE published on the website (doctoral contract) and submit an application in accordance with the procedures indicated.
  • Choose a thesis topic proposed by a laboratory (research contract, etc.)
  • Propose a thesis topic to a laboratory

Preparing your project

Making an informed choice

To be considered for a doctorate, you must hold a French research Master's degree (as of October 1 of the year of the competition) or an equivalent diploma.

It's important to get the facts before making a three-year commitment, or giving up a doctorate simply because you don't know what you're doing.

To make an informed choice, it is essential to:

  • Understand the specificity and benefits of academics through research.
  • Anticipate difficulties to avoid dropping out and make the most of the advantages of academics .
  • Be a real player in your professional future.

You can contact the director of the SIE school (dir.edsie@univ-smb.fr) or the laboratories, who will be able to answer your questions.

There are also associations that can help you with this, by answering your questions or offering avant-thèse training courses.

The Bernard Gregory Association, for example, offers a academics avant-thèse.
