Back to School Day 2024: A Promising Launch

On November 14, 2024, the Sciences, Engineering & Environment (SIE) Doctoral School welcomed its new doctoral students at a back-to-school day rich in exchanges and learning. This event, organized at USMB during JRD 2024, brought together the entire academic community: doctoral students, researchers and teacher-researchers.
A dynamic and diversified doctoral school
Bringing together 7 Research units (CARRTEL, EDYTEM, LECA, LIBM, LISTIC, LOCIE, SYMME) and some 135 PhD students and 200 researchers, the SIEDoctoral School School reflects the richness and diversity of the scientific fields it covers. Participants were welcomed by Prof. Jean-Christophe Clément, Director of theDoctoral School, who reminded them of the school's fundamental values: excellence, interdisciplinarity and support for up-and-coming researchers.
Key moments to get off to a good start
The day was punctuated by :
- Information sessions: the thesis process was explained in detail, from selection of the subject to submission of the manuscript, including follow-up committees and defense.
- Inspiring feedback: Three former doctoral students (Kévin Bredillet, Rosalie Bruel and Arnat Mahamoudou) shared their experiences and the opportunities they seized to add value to their research.
- Practical advice on how to manage your time, develop your network and find a balance between your professional and personal life was also offered. Particular attention was paid to the importance of training, whether scientific, cross-disciplinary or professional.
A committed community
The SIE Doctoral School Council was also presented, with its missions, members and role in supporting doctoral students. Special mention was made of the many initiatives to encourage exchange, such as the presentation of the MT180 competition.
Outlook
Supporting doctoral students remains a priority. The day was an opportunity to recall the many tools and opportunities available to them, including training in coding, AI, scientific writing, and many others. With 44 doctoral defenses scheduled for 2024, the SIE Doctoral School confirms its role as a driving force in the academics tomorrow's researchers at USMB.
In conclusion, this back-to-school day was not only an opportunity to welcome new PhD students, but also to strengthen ties within the SIE community. We look forward to a promising year of innovation and collaboration.
