23rd Géo'rizon Study Day - "Polar Worlds

On December 21, the 23rd Géo'rizon© study day will be held, organized by the Geography & Planning Department of theUFR Sciences et Montagne atUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB). After "Latin America", "The Street", "The Balkans", "The Island", "Geography and the Arts", "Canals and Dams", "East Asia", "Drink! Drinks around the world", "Regionalism and separatism in Europe", "East Africa (Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti)", "Diaspora(s)", "Metropolises of Europe", "Anti-world(s)", "Se perdre en forêt", "Montagnes des Sud", "Géographie des crises" and "Le Monde indien", "Un Monde de déchets" and "Les géographes et le changement climatique", "Géographie des célébrations, célébrer la géographie! ", "Geography of Poverty", "Six years after the Arab Spring", the Geography & Planning Department will be pleased to welcome 4 speakers on the theme of "Polar Worlds". The conferences will be held at the USMB Presidency in Chambéry.

As has been the custom since the first edition, in December 2006, four speakers from other universities (Poitiers, Bordeaux Montaigne, Paris-Sorbonne and Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis) will speak during the day, before debating at the final round-table "Polar Worlds and Contemporary Challenges":

  • 8:30am - 9:50am Antoine DELMAS (Research engineer, University of Poitiers) will give a talk entitled "In search of the last icebergs: development issues for polar tourism".
  • 10.15am - 11.35am: Sylvain GUYOT (University Professor, Bordeaux Montaigne University) will pose the question "Ushuaia (Argentina) and Punta Arenas (Chile): two Antarctic cities?"
  • 1.45pm - 3.05pm: Denis MERCIER (Professeur des Universités, Université Paris-Sorbonne) will speak on "Coup de chaud sur l'Arctique! The geomorphological consequences of melting ice".
  • 15h25 - 16h45 : Eric CANOBBIO (Senior Lecturer, Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis) will discuss "Geopolitics and development models in the Arctic".
