ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Since ancient Greece, mathematics has played the role of a model science in terms of its relationship with truth. Mathematics prior to the classical Greek period, essentially Mesopotamian, had no such relationship with the notion of truth. In fact, the emergence of the notion of truth among the Greeks made mathematical propositions necessary, adding reality to mathematical objects. A mathematical word that constitutes our idea of the true is the paradigm, more or less well thought-out, on which we've been happily living for the past 25 centuries. Using accessible mathematical examples, we'll look at this link, which is perceived as natural: what is this saying of the truth of mathematics? Does it have a history? What objects does it concern? We'll see that the major developments in mathematical logic in the 20th century, and in theories of language, are forcing us to take a fresh look at our relationship with the concept of truth.
