ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The more sporty among you went for a run last Sunday. Without much motivation, the pace was probably reasonable, very reasonable, to the point that you were able to maintain this speed without difficulty. What would have happened if you'd decided to run faster? Let's speed things up a bit. Not much more is happening. A little more? Ouch, you've just exceeded your critical speed and fatigue is setting in. This time, your heart is racing, your ventilation is accelerating, your time is running out. You've only got a few minutes left before you have to stop and catch your breath. This barrier speed is a central characteristic of human and, more broadly, animal locomotion. It's central to the strategy of wolf packs stalking prey, to the fatigue of cancer sufferers and even to the training of Olympic champions. There's no point in running (fast), you have to control your pace.
