Amphis pour Tous - The story of a new astronomy: gravitational waves

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Following the first direct detection of a gravitational wave by the LIGO-VIRGO collaboration on September 14, 2015, a new type of astronomy is born. This new astronomy observes the tiniest deformations of space-time, and not just starlight. It will undoubtedly bring new surprises to our knowledge of our vast universe. This talk tells the story of gravitational waves, from their concept established in the early 20th century to the constant efforts made over the past 50 years to build ever more powerful detectors. A marriage of fundamental science, high technology and poetry.
