ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

In addition to their nationality, all European Union citizens enjoy European citizenship, which has been a legal reality since the Maastricht Treaty.

Beyond the legal notion, European citizenship has a history that goes beyond the desire to reconcile the peoples of Europe. It also stems from a reflection on the special rights to be guaranteed to citizens, and gives political significance to the construction of Europe.

From the Second World War to the current war in Ukraine, via the great European conferences of the 1970s and the fall of the Iron Curtain, what is the history of European citizenship? Is it simply the result of the crises that have shaken the continent? Was it invoked in European debates? And what purpose does it serve?
