ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Contrary to what the end of the Cold War had suggested, the liberal order - broadly defined by the rule of law, representative democracy, market economy, free trade and multilateralism - is now in competition around the world. Even in Western countries, illiberal and authoritarian democracies are emerging which are in favour of order, nationalism and unilateralism. In the United States, Donald Trump, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama, seems determined to deconstruct the liberal order and refrain from promoting democracy in the world. In this unprecedented context, characterized by the trumpeted America First and the irresistible rise of China, is the liberal order doomed to a definitive decline?
