ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Forests are often referred to as the lungs of the planet. While the metaphor is instructive, it is scientifically false: unlike lungs, forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. What about lakes? Measurements show that, like animals, most lakes suck in oxygen and blow out carbon dioxide. You could say that lakes sometimes yawn or belch, since they can also emit methane! The breath of lakes is strongly influenced by their terrestrial environment, which conditions their diet, as well as their management by man.
