ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

In addition to their artistic qualities, the works of M.C. Escher and the frescoes at the Alhambra have an exceptional mathematical depth: they respect, sometimes in a hidden way, principles of symmetry that are fundamental to mathematics. These symmetries can be found in everyday life: the tiles in a bathroom or the patterns in a honeycomb obey the same principles, and have links with fields as diverse as geometry, group theory, number theory, theoretical computer science or Fourier analysis. The aim of this conference is to reveal this hidden elegance, which can be found in nature as well as in human constructions. Despite the increasing sophistication of the objects considered: "rosettes", "friezes", "regular tessellations" and "aperiodic tessellations", no mathematical knowledge is required to understand and appreciate most of their properties.
