ABOUT CAFÉ SCIENCE

Over the last 500 million years, life on Earth has undergone 5 so-called mass extinction periods. The most recent, 65 million years ago, saw the end of the non-avian dinosaurs, for example. Today, extinction rates measured in every corner of the planet are raising fears that we are entering a new phase of mass extinction, with human activities as the prime mover, prompting some researchers to speak of the beginnings of a 6th mass extinction. Combined with a warming trend unprecedented in geological history, for which human activities are also the main cause, this observation reminds us of the extent to which our species is capable of modifying the habitable surface of our planet, leading several scientists to propose the definition of a new geological era: the Anthropocene, "the age of Man".

Can we already talk about a 6th extinction? What data do we have to estimate it? What are the impacts of massive biodiversity loss? Is man in danger of becoming the victim of his own environmental negligence? Life is highly resilient, however, and there may yet be time to turn back the clock. How can we avoid such an impoverishment of living things? Regulate fishing, change agricultural and industrial methods, limit deforestation... Come and discuss all these questions at the next Café Scientifique.
