Café-science: "The third quantum revolution

january 19, 2023 8:00 PM - january 19, 2023 22:00

The Café science, proposed by the association Sciences-Actions, on the theme "The third quantum revolution", will take place on Thursday January 19, 2023 at 8pm at the MJC in Chambéry.

The Cafés Science are an opportunity for the general public to discuss, in a convivial atmosphere, with experts, researchers and professionals, a wide range of subjects, often of topical interest. They are organized by the Science-Actions association, in collaboration withuniversité Savoie Mont Blanc, the city of Chambéry, the Astrée cinema and Chambéry's MJC.

ABOUT THE DEBATE

In January 2021, President Macron announced a €1.8 billion investment plan to stimulate research and development in the quantum field. Germany, Great Britain, the USA, China, etc., have also launched such quantum plans. What are these quantum technologies, and why are they attracting so much interest and investment? In short, what are our tax dollars going to be used for?

Until now, the electronic circuits that have invaded our daily lives have operated with transistors as their main components, enabling them to manipulate very brief pulses of electric current, the famous "bits". In the most powerful microprocessors, each bit corresponds to a hundred electrons, and it is the power of this current of electrons that causes each transistor or component to switch from a "0" state to a "1" state. In a quantum component, information is conveyed by a single particle, called a "qubit". This saves a lot of energy. But we also want to take advantage of the extraordinary physical properties of this microscopic entity, which behaves like both a material particle and a wave. This allows us to increase the number of accessible states, rather than limiting ourselves to the traditional 0-1 binary pair, and also to bring into play "magical" phenomena that don't exist on a human scale, such as "entanglement" or "spintronics".

If quantum technology could be mastered and developed, what advances could be made in the performance of electronic circuits, computers, telecommunications systems and artificial intelligence? Come and find out more about the quantum universe and discover its many applications by asking questions to the experts in the field at this Café Scientifique on January 19, 2023.
