Mountains: the end of Eldorado?

100 years ago, Savoie was exporting its small chimney sweeps and fish scales. Today, it attracts tourists from all over the world. In between, there has been the development of the white gold. Fifty-nine winter sports resorts. More than 20 million snow-related overnight stays. But is this mode of development sustainable? Between 1900 and 2017, the average temperature rose by 2.1° in the northern Alps, compared with 1.1° worldwide. Below 1600-1700 meters, snow cover at the start and end of the season has become problematic. The race for artificial snow is on. All resorts have opted for snow cannons, but how long can this strategy withstand global warming? High-altitude resorts can always expand towards the highest peaks, to the detriment of areas that are still natural, but should we continue to artificialize the mountains and degrade the environment? Should we pursue a logic of snow at all costs, giving priority to the most affluent customers, or should we change our development model by taking greater account of environmental concerns and diversifying our activities? Should we do both, with high-altitude resorts and low- or mid-mountain resorts each following their own development logic?
