International multidisciplinary symposium - "Inhuman Landscapes".

october 17, 2019 08:30 - september 18, 2019 18:30

The Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Études Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) laboratory is organizing, with the support of the Environnements, Dynamiques et Territoires de la Montagne (EDYTEM) laboratory and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and in partnership with the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry, the "Inhuman Landscapes" symposium. It will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm in Salle Garriod at the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Chambéry and on Friday, October 18, 2019 in the Decottignies amphitheater at theUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc in Chambéry.

This symposium examines the a priori paradoxical notion of the "inhuman landscape", i.e. landscapes where human anchorage has been or is endangered: toxic landscapes (such as certain mines or nuclear sites), fragmented landscapes or those bearing the memory of conflict (such as Auschwitz or post-September 11 New York), or scarred landscapes (by deindustrialization in particular). Through the work of academics (historians, researchers in ecocriticism and aesthetics, geographers and specialists in English-language studies) and artists (literature and visual arts), in a broadly multidisciplinary approach, the aim is to question the representations and the political, social and cultural implications of these types of landscapes, which a priori would seem to be "anti-landscapes".
