[ONLINE] International symposium: Gilbert DURAND, the imaginary and neuroscience

May 10, 2021 09:00 - may 12, 2021 12:30 pm

To mark the centenary of Gilbert Durand's birth, the LLSETI and LPNC laboratories atuniversité Savoie Mont Blanc are organizing a symposium from May 10 to 12, 2021, on the theme of the imaginary and neuroscience.
This symposium is an initiative of the Association des amis de Gilbert Durand (AAGD), with the support of the Centre international de recherches sur l'imaginaire (CRI2I).

The aim of this meeting is to take stock of the situation between disciplines: interpreters of G. Durand, observers of the new extensions of Durandism and experimental researchers in the neurosciences will engage in a highly topical epistemological dialogue.

In the 1960s, Gilbert Durand developed a comprehensive, complex and transdisciplinary concept of the imagination, centered on linguistic myth and visual languages. Influenced by Cl. Lévi-Strauss, who emphasized the notion of mythic structure and neuronal rooting, G. Durand opted for a "figurative structuralism" in which the meaning of images was also a matter of symbolization.

More than 50 years later, advances in neurological and cognitive sciences are enabling us to take a fresh look at this dimension of Durandian conceptions. How does this new knowledge shed light on imagination and the imaginary, to what extent does it converge with G. Durand's earlier references, and what new post-Durandian anthropology of the imaginary is emerging?
