Seminar "Comparing practices, comparing languages: what benefits for the FLE classroom?"

On Thursday February 9, 2023, the Laboratoire Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Études Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) atuniversité Savoie Mont Blanc is organizing a seminar on the didactics of language and culture on the theme of " Comparing practices, comparing languages: what benefits for the FLE classroom?" in room 502 on the Jacob-Bellecombette campus.

The program

Speakers include Emilie Kasazian, MCF, Université de Lille, Laboratoire STL - Savoirs, Textes, Langage (UMR 8163 - CNRS) and Claudia D'Amelio, PhD student, Université Savoie Mont Blanc, Laboratoire LLSETI. Their presentation will be followed by a discussion with the audience. The following topics will be addressed:

  • "Teaching French grammar to beginner learners: comparisons of teachers' practices and discourse" by Emilie Kasazian (Laboratoires STL): Often studied from the point of view of methodology, grammatical practices also involve techniques and discourse that are specific to the teacher but little described in language didactics. On the basis of classroom observations, we propose a comparative analysis of grammatical practices between different teachers of French in the 6th grade in England. The analysis takes account of the different techniques used (semiotic, corporeal, mnemonic), and highlights the specificity of grammatical discourse used in the classroom to conceptualize a point of language.
  • "Comparing languages and dialects: an effective approach to remedy negative transfer?" by Claudia D'Amelio, (LLSETI) : In the language classroom, the right to make mistakes has always been a hotly debated topic. First seen as a sign of weakness on the part of the learner, then as a phenomenon inherent to learning, error is at the heart of language-culture acquisition. It is essential to take it into account if we are to reap the benefits of this stage of language appropriation. Remediation is therefore a key moment, as necessary as it is delicate. Based on a study carried out in Italy last year, we will propose a plurilingual didactic approach aimed at reducing errors in the FLE classroom and raising awareness of the benefits of links between languages. Here, the errors taken into account will be negative transfers from Italian, German and English, which will serve as the basis for plurilingual remediation. The latter will be the result of a six-stage protocol based on oral repetition and visual memorization. Languages and dialects will be compared in order to stimulate an almost unconscious memorization of the proposed positive transfers, and to develop a plurilingual metalinguistic reflection.
