Amphis pour Tous - French mountain tourism: a demographic breakdown?

May 3rd 2018 18:30 - May 3, 2018 8:00 PM

The conference "France's tourist mountains: demographics on the wane?", presented by Christophe Gauchon, Professor of the Environnements, Dynamiques et Territoires de la Montagne (EDYTEM) Laboratory, UFR Sciences et Montagne, will take place. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 6:30pm in Albertville (Le Dôme Cinéma, 135 place de l'Europe).

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

When mountain tourism development policies were launched in the post-war decades, they were aimed not only at developing economic activities, but also at halting the demographic decline that had been going on for too long. At first, these objectives seemed to have been achieved. However, over the past twenty years, many of the communes within the "snow perimeter" have once again recorded negative migratory balances: of an initial sample of 27 communes supporting winter sports resorts in the Northern Alps (Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments), 23 were in this situation between 2008 and 2013. And 10 of them have had a continuous negative balance since 1990!

While the region's appeal as a tourist destination continues, it has not been matched by its residential appeal. The conference will take a close look at this trend, and seek to identify possible explanations.
