The lecture “French Mountain Tourism: A Demographic Crisis?” presented by Christophe Gauchon, Professor at theLaboratory for Mountain Environments, Dynamics, and Territories(EDYTEM),Faculty of Sciences and Mountain Studies, will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in Albertville (Le Dôme Cinéma, 135 Place de l’Europe).
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
When mountain tourism development policies were launched in the decades following the war, they aimed to develop economic activities, but also to halt the demographic decline that had been going on for too long. These objectives initially seemed to have been achieved. However, over the past 20 years, many municipalities in the "snow zone" have once again recorded negative net migration: out of an initial sample of 27 municipalities supporting winter sports resorts in the Northern Alps (departments of Isère, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie), 23 were in this situation between 2008 and 2013. And 10 of them have had a continuous negative balance since 1990!
While the area remains attractive to tourists, this has not been matched by its appeal to residents. The conference will provide a detailed assessment of this trend and seek to identify possible explanations.
