ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Contrary to what the end of the Cold War might have suggested, the liberal order - broadly defined as the rule of law, representative democracy, market economy, free trade and multilateralism - is now facing competition in many parts of the world. Even in Western countries, illiberal and authoritarian democracies are emerging that favor order, nationalism and unilateralism. In the United States, Donald Trump, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama, seems determined to deconstruct the liberal order and refrain from any promotion of democracy worldwide. In this unprecedented context, characterized by the Trumpian slogan America First and the irresistible rise of China, is the liberal order doomed to a definitive decline?
