ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Contrary to what the end of the Cold War had suggested, the liberal order—broadly defined as the rule of law, representative democracy, the market economy, free trade, and multilateralism—is now facing competition almost everywhere in the world. In the United States, Donald Trump, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama, seems determined to dismantle the liberal order and refrain from promoting democracy around the world. In this unprecedented context, characterized by Trump's slogan "America First" and the irresistible rise of China, is the liberal order doomed to decline for good?
