The conference "Fewer glaciers, more earthquakes?", presented by Riccardo Vassallo, lecturer at theInstitut des Sciences de la Terre (ISTerre), UFR Sciences et Montagne, will take place on Monday April 12, 2021 at 6pm at TECHNOPARC (conference room on the first floor) in Saint-Genis-Pouilly.
It will also be held on Tuesday April 27, 2021 at 6pm in Chambéry.
Conferences will take place subject to health conditions linked to the Coronovirus epidemic (COVID-19) and in compliance with the safety instructions in force at the venue hosting the event.
About the conference
Glaciers are melting rapidly all over the world in response to global warming, with well-known consequences at the earth's surface. However, the disappearance of large volumes of ice could have an impact on a natural phenomenon that occurs several kilometers below the surface: seismicity. This phenomenon is particularly spectacular in the Patagonian Andes on the scale of the last 20,000 years following the last great glaciation. Over the last century and a half, glaciers in this region have been melting at record rates. Over the same period, several major earthquakes have occurred. Is this a coincidence, or are current conditions comparable to the post-glacial period? What about the seismic risk in the Alps?
