Campus en Musique - "Printemps Olympique!" with the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie

February 8, 2018 12:00 - February 8, 2018 1:00 PM

TheOrchestre des Pays de Savoie returns toUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) for a new season of "Campus en Musique". On Thursday February 8, a string sextet will perform the "Printemps Olympique" concert on the Bourget-du-Lac campus, from 12 noon to 1 p.m., at the Espace de Vie Étudiante (EVE - Building 6).

ABOUT THE CONCERT

This chamber music concert is dedicated to the themes of music, mountains, winter and Olympism, on the occasion of the XXIIIe Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February 2018. Apart from the anecdotal figure of cellist, mountaineer and skier Maurice Baquet, friend of photographer Robert Doisneau, classical music is little associated with the world of the Olympic Games. In this chamber music program, the musicians immerse themselves in the Baroque theme of theOlimpiade, a work by the great poet Metastasius, and one that has been treated by many composers. True to the cosmopolitan Olympic spirit, the program takes us all the way to Korea, with a melody inspired by the very places where the XXIII Olympiad takes place in 2018. Then comes the mountain theme with a piece by Ernest Bloch, composed in Savoie, and a creation by Édouard Delale on the theme of Olympic disciplines. The rest of the concert features classical pieces by authors who won awards at the first Olympiads and who wanted to give the arts a place - the best-known of these laureates being Josef Suk. This spring concert concludes with one of the masterpieces written for this chamber music ensemble: Johannes Brahms'Second Sextet , composed in 1865.
