As part of the cycle of philosophical conferences on ethical issues, the Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Études Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) laboratory atUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and the Association des professeurs de philosophie de l'enseignement public are organizing a conference on the theme "Contours and currents of bioethics", led by Jean Yves Goffi, professor emeritus of philosophy at Grenoble Alpes University.

This conference will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm in Room 3 of the USMB Presidency in Chambéry.

About the conference

Bioethics is a social practice with its own texts (bioethics laws, etc.) and institutions (Comité National Consultatif d'Éthique pour les Sciences de la Vie et de la Santé, etc.). It is also a specialized field of philosophical ethics, whose very purpose is not self-evident and is open to discussion.

We propose to show that there are at least two distinct genealogies and interpretations of bioethics. For some, bioethics is a means of protecting the human person in a context where advances in technoscience could lead to a new holocaust. Bioethics thus conceived is an extension of immemorial medical ethics, which "simply" needs to be adapted to a new context. For others, bioethics is distinct from medical ethics and concerns all interactions between biotechnologies and living organisms in general. It cannot be an update of medical ethics, even under the name of biomedical ethics, but must address new situations and questions. It aims to accompany and supervise the introduction of new biotechnologies.
Neither of these two interpretations is without doubt free of ambiguities and tensions. We will indicate which.
