As part of the series of philosophical lectures on ethical issues, the Languages, Literature, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies (LLSETI) at the University of Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and the Association of Philosophy Teachers in Public Education are organizing a conference on the theme "Contours and Trends in Bioethics," led by Jean Yves Goffi, professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Grenoble Alpes.
This conference will take place on Thursday, December 5, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Room 3 of the USMB Presidency in Chambéry.
About the conference
Bioethics is a social practice with its own texts (bioethics laws, etc.) and institutions (National Consultative Ethics Committee for Life Sciences and Health, etc.). It is also a specialized field of philosophical ethics, whose very purpose is not self-evident and is subject to debate.
We propose to show that there are at least two distinct genealogies and interpretations that can be used to clarify this concept. For some, bioethics is a means of protecting human beings in a context where advances in technoscience are likely to lead to a new holocaust. Bioethics, thus conceived, is an extension of time-honored medical ethics, which must "simply" be adapted to a new context. For others, bioethics is distinct from medical ethics and concerns all interactions between biotechnologies and living beings in general. It cannot consist of an update of medical ethics, even under the name of biomedical ethics, but must address new situations and questions. It aims to support and supervise the implementation of new biotechnologies.
Neither of these two interpretations is free of ambiguities and tensions, as one might expect. We will indicate which ones.
