USMB international students discover Savoyard craftsmanship
On Saturday, April 2, 2022, around 60 students accompanied by the USMB's international relations department took a cruise to visit Chanaz and Hautecombe Abbey.
After boarding at the major port of Aix-les-Bains, the students had the opportunity to sail on the largest natural lake of glacial origin entirely located in France, Lac du Bourget. The weather conditions weren't ideal, but that's how the snow-capped mountains enhanced the landscape.
The cruise continued along the Savières canal to Chanaz. In the village of Chanaz, the students discovered the process of making walnut oil as it was in the 19th century, in the small mill.
They then used their free time to visit village shops, such as a barge housing a beehive, where they learned more about honey, or a typical French brocante. Some also went to see the village church or explore the forest around the mill.
After lunch, the boat resumed its journey to the former princely necropolis of the House of Savoy, Hautecombe Abbey, where the students visited the abbey church to round off a day that delighted many.
Local French handicrafts are a very interesting facet of our culture that it's important to promote. Small villages are an integral part of many French people's lives, so we think it's a good idea to offer this kind of excursion to international students.
USMB international students at the highest peak in the Alps
On Saturday, February 19, 2022, USMB's international relations department organized a day trip to the Aiguille du Midi (Chamonix Mont-Blanc) for the university's international students.
The 60 students and 3 chaperones (Nina Soufi, Séverine Quilliet and Amandine Bouchet) admired the beauty of snow-covered Alpine landscapes (including Mont-Blanc) at 3,842 metres above sea level!
We were extremely lucky to be able to climb the Aiguille du Midi by cable car, with a visit to the museum areas, the panorama and the step into the void. Indeed, in the week leading up to the event, France's highest cable car was closed due to bad weather, so Saturday was the first day the Aiguille du Midi could open.
The scenery was breathtaking. The students loved it, and it was well worth braving the cold (-14°C, felt -20°C) to see it. As the altitude can take its toll, the students were free to descend whenever they wished to visit the town of Chamonix.
Chamonix and Mont-Blanc are iconic places around the world, but they can be difficult to get to without a car, and the cost of activities can be high. Through us, students have the opportunity to see these places with ease. Apart from that, the Alps have a lot to offer and so this outing achieves our aim of introducing them to the different facets of the Savoyard territory.
In partnership with the French Embassy in Indonesia and CROUS Grenoble Alpes.
It's an opportunity to discover Indonesia, its language, culture and university system, to learn about the Gamelan, a traditional Indonesian instrumental ensemble, and to sample some local culinary specialties at the Bourget-du-Lac university restaurant.
The International Relations Department has organized an integration seminar from August 25 to 31, 2021, for new international students at USMB.
Language Fortnight: a great success!
TheUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc offered to develop your foreign language skills (French as a foreign language, English, Spanish, Italian, intercomprehension, etc.) by taking part in the academics workshops organized in Chambéry as part of the "Quinzaine des langues" at the end of June 2021.
This new international event brought together staff from the USMB and our partner universities, notably those of the European university UNITA.
