International students from the USMB discover Savoyard crafts

Aix-les-Bians 2022

On Saturday, April 2, 2022, about sixty students accompanied by the USMB's international relations department took a cruise to visit Chanaz and Hautecombe Abbey.

After embarking at the large port of Aix-les-Bains, the students had the opportunity to sail on the largest natural lake of glacial origin entirely located in France, the Lac du Bourget. The weather conditions were not optimal, but the snow-covered mountains enhanced the landscape.

The cruise continued on the Savières canal to Chanaz. In the village of Chanaz, the students discovered the process of making walnut oil as in the 19th century in the small mill.

They then used their free time to visit village shops such as the beehive barge where they learned more about honey or a typical French brocante. Some also went to see the village church or explore the forest around the mill.

After lunch, the boat sailed back to the former princely necropolis of the House of Savoy, Hautecombe Abbey, where the students visited the abbey church to finish the day, which delighted many.

Local French crafts are a very interesting facet of our culture and it is important to make them known. Small villages are an integral part of many French people's lives so we think it is interesting to offer this kind of excursion to international students.

USMB international students at the highest peak in the Alps

Chamonix 2022

On Saturday 19 February 2022, the USMB's international relations department organised a day at the Aiguille du Midi (Chamonix Mont-Blanc) for the university's international students.

The 60 students and the 3 chaperones (Nina Soufi, Séverine Quilliet and Amandine Bouchet) admired the beauty of the snow-covered Alpine landscapes (including Mont Blanc) at an altitude of 3,842 metres!

We were extremely lucky to be able to climb the Aiguille du Midi by cable car with a visit to the museum areas, the panorama and the step into the void. Indeed, all the week before the event, the highest cable car in France was closed due to bad weather, Saturday was the first day the Aiguille du Midi could open.

The scenery was breathtaking. The students loved it, it was well worth braving the cold (-14°C, felt -20°C) to see it. As the altitude can take its toll on the head, students were free to come down whenever they wanted to visit the town of Chamonix.

Chamonix and Mont Blanc are iconic places around the world, however it is sometimes difficult to access them without a car and the cost of activities can be high. Through us, students have the opportunity to see these places easily. Apart from that, the Alps have a lot to offer and so this outing achieves our goal of introducing them to the different facets of the Savoyard territory.

Chamonix 2022

In partnership with the French Embassy in Indonesia and the CROUS Grenoble Alpes.

This is an opportunity to discover Indonesia, its language, culture and university system, to learn about the Gamelan, a traditional Indonesian instrumental ensemble, and to taste some of the local culinary specialities at the university restaurant in Bourget-du-Lac.

The International Relations Department organised an integration seminar from 25 to 31 August 2021 for new international students at the USMB.
