On Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at the MJC in Chambéry, the science outreach organization Science Actions is hosting a discussion on the topic “Magnetism: Questions, Answers, and Misconceptions.”
ABOUT THE MEETING
What is magnetism? What physical phenomena lie behind the amazing effects of magnetic objects? What research is currently being conducted in this field, and what are the new applications and innovations that incorporate magnetism? Meet researchers and experts in this field to discuss this phenomenon that is ever-present in our daily lives.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
- Alain Fontaine, physicist and director of the Néel Institute from 2007 to 2010.

ABOUT SCIENCE CAFÉS
Science Cafés give the general public the opportunity to engage in discussion, in a friendly atmosphere, with experts and researchers on a variety of topics—many of which are highly relevant to current events. They are organized by the Science-Actions association, in collaboration with the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, the City of Chambéry, the Astrée movie theater, and the MJC of Chambéry.
These evening events are structured around a debate that unfolds based on questions posed by the audience to the speakers. These are neither lectures nor presentations given by a single speaker. They allow everyone to form their own opinion on often complex topics for which there is no simple or single solution. They also provide an opportunity to learn more about the research being conducted locally in the Chambéry area and neighboring regions by researchers, engineers, and doctors who volunteer their time for our events.
Once a quarter, the Cafés Science take the form of a film screening called Ciné Science. In this case, the film is shown at the L’Astrée movie theater at 8:30 p.m. It is followed by a discussion with two or three experts on the film’s theme.
