Lecture: “Myths and Facts About Geo- and Bio-Based Materials”

November 19, 2026, 6:00 p.m. - November 19, 2026, 7:30 p.m.

lecture titled “Myths and Facts About Geo- and Bio-Based Materials” (1)

The lecture “Myths and Facts About Geo- and Bio-based Materials” will be presented by Olivier Plé, a faculty member and researcher at the USMB’s Laboratory of Energy and Building Processes (LOCIE), and Sofiane Amziane, a professor at the Pascal Institute of the UCA, on November 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the USMB President’s Office, 27 rue Marcoz.

About the conference:

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential. The construction industry accounts for approximately 23% of CO2 emissions in France. It is therefore crucial to reduce these emissions through more sustainable construction practices and the use of low-carbon materials. Earth, hemp, straw, wood, cork… are attracting growing interest in the face of the climate crisis. They are often presented as the solution for building more energy-efficient and comfortable structures. However, many misconceptions circulate, both positive and negative. This conference aims to separate scientific facts from myths. Can a building be constructed out of earth? Do bio-based insulation materials always replace conventional materials? Are they durable, and resistant to fire, moisture, or earthquakes? What are their limitations, and in what situations do they perform best?
