Work-study programs at USMB

Nearly 80 work-study programs are offered to approximately 1,750 work-study students, including 1,650 apprentices, at Savoie Mont Blanc University. These programs cover various degree levels (from a three-year degree to a five-year degree).

Work-study programs combine a theoretical learning phase at a training institution with a practical learning phase at a company. There are two types of contracts for work-study programs:

What audiences?

Young people aged 16 to 29; certain groups may enter an apprenticeship program after turning 29, particularly those who have been granted Recognition of Status as a Disabled Worker (RQTH).

Which employers?

Businesses in the craft, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors, as well as employers in the nonprofit sector and the liberal professions; employers in the non-industrial and non-commercial public sector (state, local, and hospital civil service, as well as public administrative institutions).

The apprentice:

They are training to earn a degree or an accredited credential and are gaining their first significant work experience. They are subject to the same rules and enjoy the same benefits as all other employees. They receive compensation calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage or the minimum rate set by collective bargaining agreements (some collective bargaining agreements or industry-wide agreements provide for higher compensation).

The employer:

The employer is responsible for providing the apprentice with on-the-job training. The employer assigns tasks to the apprentice that have been agreed upon by the school’s academic advisor and the apprentice’s supervisor, in line with the intended occupation and the degree being pursued. The wages paid to the apprentice are fully or partially exempt from employer contributions.

What audiences?

Young people aged 16 to 25
Job seekers aged 26 and older
Certain specific groups may be eligible for the professional training contract

Which employers?

Any employer required to contribute to the funding of continuing vocational training. The State, local authorities, and their public administrative agencies may not enter into professional training contracts.

The work-study student:

Work-study students are subject to the same rules and enjoy the same benefits as all other employees. They receive compensation calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage or the minimum wage set by collective bargaining agreements (some collective bargaining agreements or industry-wide agreements provide for higher compensation). The cost of training is covered by the company.

The employer:

The company is responsible for providing the work-study student with on-the-job training. A mentor is assigned to welcome and guide the student within the company. The mentor assigns the student tasks that are relevant to the intended career path and the degree program.
