Science and Sport atUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc

Sport is a theme of research and academics very present atUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc. In addition to the regional exhibition, the work of 5 laboratories is highlighted:

HEALTH, PERFORMANCE AND INNOVATION
LIBM 's research focuses on physiology, biomechanics, neuroscience and engineering sciences applied to physical activity, sport and health. This research has led to a number of innovations in sports equipment optimization. Some of these are presented in the exhibition to illustrate the laboratory's work: trail shoes adapted to the foot's position, instrumented ski boots, etc.)

The Systems and Materials for Mechatronics Laboratory (SYMME) conducts research focused on innovation for health and industrial innovation. Some innovative sports equipment is on display: innovative jetcycle pedalo, yonner...

MAN/NATURE INTERACTIONS
The Environnements Dynamiques Territoires Montagnes (EDYTEM) laboratory and the Laboratoire d'Écologie Alpine (LECA) laboratory work respectively on the current environmental and socio-economic challenges facing mountain environments and territories, as well as on the functioning of alpine species and ecosystems, and on predicting their responses to change.

THE PLACE OF WOMEN IN SKIING
USMB's Science and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities (STAPS) department, together with the Langages, Littératures, Sociétés, Études Transfrontalières et Internationales (LLSETI) laboratory, present the results of their interdisciplinary study of the place of women in mountain sports.

Equipment innovation is an integral part of many USMB courses. In the form of tutored projects, this theme is a relevant pedagogical support. Some projects are carried out in association with companies that contribute their know-how.
Some result in a prototype or patent. The USMB works in partnership with various organizations (its Club des entreprises, theSavoie Technolac student incubator, the Galiléo incubator, etc.) to support project leaders in the creation of companies and start-ups.

Three examples of USMB courses working in the Science & Sport field:

  • Master STAPS - Ingénierie et Ergonomie de l'Activité Physique (IEAP) of the USMB in partnership with the LIBM team in Chambéry: One of the teaching axes is the development of an innovative sports equipment project over a 6-month period. Each project sets out a protocol and phases of experimentation to evaluate the product (its technical characteristics, its performance, assessing existing competition, etc.).
  • DUT Génie Mécanique et Productique (GMP) at theAnnecy IUT in conjunction with the SYMME laboratory: university projects such as the streamlined bicycle, the JetCycle and the Yonner are teaching aids for the GMP department.
    - The Performance Sports Textile and Footwear (PSTF) professional bachelor's degree at the Annecy IUT: in this academics program, taught entirely in English, students complete a group tutored project in response to a request from a company in the sports industry. The company supports them throughout the project, from October to the end of February.

USMB Innovation Raid
The Raid Innovation combines outdoor and cerebral sports. This event is an opportunity to bring together the ingenuity and creativity of students with innovation projects or the design of services and products submitted by companies. Over the course of two days, teams take part in a series of sporting disciplines (trail running, mountain biking, water sports, etc.) and work on an R&D topic proposed by companies in the sports, well-being and health sectors.

Students at the USMB, their study project has led to the creation of their own company. Their story is presented in the exhibition.

  •  Wens:
"Following an STAPS- Adapted Physical Activity degree at Grenoble University, I joined Savoie Mont-Blanc University as part of the Engineering and Ergonomics of Physical Activity master's program.
In addition to creating adapted physical activity programs for people with specific needs, I wanted to complete my academics by designing and creating adapted products.
During the second semester of the first year of my Master's degree, I attended a module taught by Annie Rouard on biomechanics and motricity. The idea emerged, then became a little more concrete in a working group, before finally giving rise to a possible entrepreneurial project in the 2nd year of the Master's program, when I was lucky enough to be able to explore the subject in greater depth during my end-of-study internship. A patent was filed, and then structures showed confidence in us and followed us in our adventure (such as SATT Linksium), which enabled us to work with LIBM, Frédérique Hintzy and Nicolas Forestier, vice-president of research at USMB. This is what enabled me to bring the project to fruition and give birth to the Wens company in June 2018."
The USMB directed me towards structures that were previously unknown to me, such as Savoie Technolac's student-entrepreneur incubator, and helped me bridge the gap between my university project and my entrepreneurial project. The link with USMB and LIBM remains strong, as we are still working together today.
  • Samaya:
Arthur and Ghislain met while studying for a DUT in mechanical engineering at the IUT in Annecy, France. These three years enabled them to combine high-level sport (Arthur road cycling, Ghislain difficulty climbing in the French team) with their school studies. It was at academics that the duo got to know each other and were introduced to the sport of roaming.
During his PSTF (performance sports textiles and footwear) degree at the Annecy IUT, Ghislain worked on a university project to design an ultralight tent for outdoor sports, proposed by Antoine Barthelemy. Thanks to the consistency of his initial designs, his enthusiasm for the project and the advice of the jury, Ghislain joined the OSV (Outdoor Sports Valley) incubator at the Annecy Base Camp in May 2018, providing him with the knowledge linked to entrepreneurship. Arthur, who has just returned from 6 months' volunteer work in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake, quickly took part in the initial testing phases carried out on the prototypes made by Ghislain. They take these first handmade prototypes to the summit of Mont-Blanc, with a night at 4808m on August 15, 2018.
Following the test phases, Arthur takes a leading role in the project and the two teammates officially file the articles of association for SAMAYA SAS on November 5, 2018, together. Without delay, the young startup was invited to the largest outdoor trade show in Munich as part of ISPO Brandnew, which offers a handful of innovative startups the opportunity to position themselves on the international outdoor market stage. This first trade show propelled SAMAYA into international development, attracting customers and distributors from all over the world.
Thanks to the OSV incubator and motivated, committed volunteers, the team was able to surround itself with skilled people in every area from business creation to product development.
The combination of USMB and OSV has provided a stable foundation for the company to accelerate the brand's development in the right directions.

The USMB honors its top sportsmen and women by presenting portraits of selected athletes during the exhibition. The online portrait gallery showcases the careers of athletes studying in the various courses offered by the USMB.

The top sportsmen and women atUniversité Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB), whatever their discipline and level of performance, pursue their passion in parallel with their higher education studies, and make the university shine with their sporting results.
Every year, around 400 athletes study at the USMB (some 25 sports disciplines represented).
The USMB has won over 200 world medals for its students since 1985.

At the start of the new academic year, the Raid SHN will take place on September 26, 2019 in Annecy
This sports raid offered to all high-level sportsmen and women studying at the USMB is an important unifying event at the start of the academic year, promoting their integration into the university.
