ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Since ancient Greece, mathematics has served as a model science because of its relationship to truth. Mathematics prior to the classical Greek period—primarily Mesopotamian—did not have such a relationship with the concept of truth. One might even go so far as to say that the emergence of the notion of truth among the Greeks made mathematical propositions necessary, in turn lending reality to mathematical objects. A mathematical concept that constitutes our idea of truth is the paradigm—more or less well-conceived—on which we have comfortably lived for 25 centuries. Through accessible mathematical examples, we will examine this connection, which is perceived as natural: what is this “truth” of mathematics? Does it have a history? To which objects does it apply? We will then see that the major developments in mathematical logic in the 20th century, and those in language theories, require us to completely rethink our relationship to the concept of truth.
