ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Disability crystallizes many political and social issues. While the proportion of people with disabilities is estimated to be around 15% of the world's population, the
definition of disability sometimes remains ambiguous. Are the concepts of impairment and disability interchangeable? Does the presence of a physical, sensory, or mental impairment
necessarily lead to a situation of disability? Conversely, is disability a social construct largely shaped by the cultural context in which the individual lives? How can commercial and non-commercial organizations address the issue of disability without risking fueling stereotypes that could stigmatize individuals? In
drawing on the main findings from the fields of the sociology of disability and disability studies, we deconstruct certain preconceived ideas by clarifying the vocabulary commonly
used to refer to disability.
