ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The more athletic among you went for a run last Sunday. Without much motivation, your pace was probably reasonable—very reasonable, in fact—to the point that you were able to maintain that speed without difficulty. What would have happened if you’d decided to run faster? Let’s pick up the pace a bit. Not much else happens. A little more? Ouch, you’ve just exceeded your critical speed; fatigue sets in. This time, your heart races, your breathing quickens, and your time is running out. You only have a few minutes left before you have to stop to catch your breath and regain your composure. This threshold speed is a central characteristic of human locomotion and, more broadly, animal locomotion. It lies at the heart of the strategy of wolf packs tracking prey, the fatigue of people with cancer, and even the training of Olympic champions. There’s no point in running (fast); you have to control your pace.
