ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The most athletic among you went running last Sunday. Without much motivation, the pace was probably reasonable, very reasonable, to the point that you were able to maintain this speed without difficulty. What would have happened if you had decided to run faster? Let's speed up a little. Not much else happens. A little more? Ouch, you've just exceeded your critical speed, and fatigue sets in. This time, your heart races, your breathing quickens, and your time is running out. You only have a few minutes left before you have to stop to catch your breath and regain your composure. This barrier speed is a central feature of human and, more broadly, animal locomotion. It is at the heart of the strategy of wolf packs tracking prey, the fatigue of cancer patients, and even the training of Olympic champions. There is no point in running (fast); you have to control your pace.
