ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The production of mineral raw materials is growing exponentially to meet the needs and economic development of a growing global population. In a world in transition, needs are changing, both in terms of the nature of the raw materials required and in terms of quantity. The countries that produce these materials (countries in the South) are often not the ones that consume the end products (countries in the North). As a result, the areas where mining takes place bear the environmental and social impacts, while extractive activities compete with local populations for access to fundamental resources such as water and land. We therefore need to rethink the governance and sustainability of extractive activities at all levels, from the mining area to the global scale.
