The conference "French for integration? 20 years of migration language policy," presented by Maude Vadot, lecturer and researcher at the Languages, Literatures, Societies, Cross-Border and International Studies Laboratory (LLSETI) – UFR Letters, Languages, and Humanities (LLSH), will take place on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at La Turbine Cinema, Rue de l'Arlequin, Cran-Gevrier, 74960 Annecy.
About the conference
Introduction of compulsory French language courses upon arrival, language requirements for obtaining a multi-year residence permit, a residence card, and citizenship: proficiency in French is now a means of regulating the right to live in France.
However, a recent INSEE survey shows that 52% of immigrants whose mother tongue is not French have significant difficulty with writing. Over the past 20 years, France has developed a genuine "language policy for immigration."
What are the principles behind this policy? What are its limitations and blind spots? How can we improve it? Let's hear from those who are learning French!
